A radiator that is toasty at the top but stubbornly cold along the bottom is one of the most common heating complaints we see across Scunthorpe and the wider North Lincolnshire area. It is almost always down to sludge, and the good news is that it is usually fixable. Here is what is really going on inside that radiator and what you can sensibly do about it.
When a radiator is cold at the top but warm lower down, that is trapped air and you simply bleed it. Cold at the bottom is the opposite problem. Heavy iron oxide sludge, formed as water reacts with the steel inside your radiators and pipes, sinks and settles along the base where the flow is slowest.
That layer of black, gritty sludge blocks hot water from circulating across the bottom of the panel. The top still gets heat, so the radiator feels half working. Over the years we have seen this on everything from older terraces in Ashby to newer builds out towards Bottesford, so it is not about the age of your house.
A few quick checks tell you a lot and cost nothing. Run each radiator up to temperature, then carefully feel across the whole surface with the flat of your hand.
For a single sludged radiator, we can often isolate it at the valves, remove it, and flush it through outside or over a drain. That clears the settled debris and frequently brings the panel back to full heat for a modest call out and labour charge, typically somewhere in the region of 80 to 150 pounds depending on access and how many radiators are affected.
If most of your radiators are cold at the bottom, the whole system is likely full of sludge and a power flush makes more sense. This pushes water and cleaning chemicals through at pressure to shift the build up. Clearing sludge is only half the job. Without protection it will return within a year or two.
